I have been asked many times in my life how could I believe in a God who allowed me to go through such a horrible childhood. If there was "a such thing" as God He would have been there with me and stopped the abuse.I would be dishonest if I were to say I never thought those things myself. It is hard to imagine a loving God who would allow horrendous acts of violence and pain on a child. But know this: God was (and is) saddened by the pain I endured. So why allow it? The answer lies at the very beginning of creation. God gave Adam and Eve the freedom of choice. To believe, accept and follow Him. Unfortunately, satan tempted Eve to open her eyes to things God did not want her and Adam to see. They made a choice to go against what God asked and to do what they felt like doing. In that instant SIN entered our lives. Because of that we will never experience the paradise God had intended for us until we are in heaven. Sin is ugly, cruel, hateful and ultimately leads to death.(For the wages of sin is death.. Romans 6:23a) Guess what?! Death is not the end for those who believe in Jesus Christ! (but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23b)
How glad I am for that! Did you know that multiple personality disorder is truly a blessing from God? He gave us the gift of survival by blessing us with intelligence and creativity allowing us to dissociate in times of pain and suffering. Thanks be to God! He allowed us to be spared so much! Do you remember the poem "Footprints"? God carried us during those times. Think back to your own life. Have you ever gone through something that you didn't think you could ever survive and have maybe even contemplated taking your life? Think back. It was awful but you SURVIVED it. Did you do it on your own? Maybe you think you did but I can tell you that you were not alone! (Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew:28:20b)
You never have to feel alone again. What comfort that is to a lonely heart. You are loved! Loved so much that Jesus died for YOU! No matter what you have done in the past or even what you are doing right now in your life HE LOVES YOU! For a person who was abused that can be difficult to believe. It may take you some to accept but when you finally reach the point of 100% surrender to the Lord you will have a peace that has been unknown to you until now.
